Times may be tough, but the county still has a heart.
At their Tuesday meeting the commissioners agreed to give $1,500 to the Local Emergency Assistance Program (LEAP).
The money will help pay for rent, prescriptions, and utilities for residents who qualify for aide.
Since January, the Department of Social Services has spent $6,798.25 through LEAP to help families who are having a hard time making ends meet. Kerry Ahearn-Brown, department director, said more and more people are coming in to use the program because of the economy, which has left LEAP with just $346.56 to make it to June 30.
“My predecessor would fulfill requests until the money ran out and then cut people off … I always say it doesn’t hurt to ask,” said Ahearn-Brown.
“We know your job is getting tougher, but so is ours, so spend it wisely,” said Commissioner Ron Fithian.
