The annual President’s Award, given to an individual for an exemplary record of sustained and acknowledged contribution to the quality of life in Chestertown, Kent County and at Washington College, was awarded to Jane E. Hukill. Hukill, a former college librarian, has lived in Kent County almost 25 years and in that time has worked tirelessly to better the community. She has served actively on the boards of many county organizations including Kent School, Horizons, Children’s Home Foundation, Heron Point, St. Martin’s Ministries, Historical Society of Kent County, The Mainstay, and The Chester River Health Foundation.
Jane Hukill is also an activist who, with her late husband, Bob Hukill, organized a successful five-year battle, including lobbying Congress, to convince the US Army to build a neutralization plant rather than a chemical weapons incinerator to neutralize the 1500 tons of mustard gas stored at Aberdeen Proving Ground. She is also a founder of Washington College’s Academy of Lifelong Learning, and is a founder of non-profit Homeports, an alliance for life care at home. Hukill received the award the Washington College Convocation on February 19.
