Across the nation, an anti-garbage crusade known as the “zero waste movement” is taking shape in college cafeterias, corporations, national parks, restaurants, and both large and small municipalities. The concept is simple: Produce less waste. Recycle or compost whatever we can to keep materials out of landfills. Shun any containers or other packaging that is not biodegradable. The Town of Chestertown, Infinity Recycling, Kent County Recycling & Waste Disposal, the Mid-Shore Regional Recycling Program, and Washington College’s Center for Environment & Society will screen the documentary, “Garbage Dreams,” and present a lecture by Rick Anthony, “Zero Waste Communities.”

Since its formation in 1994, the award-winning Gemini Piano Trio has been praised for consummate technique and vibrant musicality. The trio consists of pianist Hsiu-Hui Wang; violinist Sheng-Tsung Wang; and cellist Benjamin Myers. They have recorded acclaimed CDs featuring works by Ives, Brahms, Ravel and Shostakovich. The Washington College Learn-At-Lunch series will present a lecture by Sherwin Markman, a member of Lyndon Johnson’s White House staff. Markman will speak about and demonstrate Johnson’s masterful way of working with Congress, a skill that gained passage of such extraordinary and then controversial legislation as the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and much more. Brad Parks is a former reporter for the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger who put his newspaper career behind him to devote himself full-time to writing mystery novels based on his experiences. His first, “Faces of the Gone,” was released in early December. Because he is also the proud son of Rock Hall residents, he has agreed to give a talk and book-signing at the Mainstay. Following his talk, he will autograph copies of his book. Books will be available for purchase at a discount and $5 of every purchase will benefit the Mainstay. Refreshments will be served. This event was postponed from December 20.
