The hills at Kent School will be alive with The Sound of Music on Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May 14th, when the Class of 2016 presents the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. The Kent School play will start at 7:30 each night, and will be held in the school’s gymnasium located at 6788 Wilkins Lane in Chestertown. The public is invited to attend, and admission is free.
The popular musical debuted on Broadway in 1959, starring Mary Martin, and was made into a movie starring Julie Andrews in 1965. It is based on the true story of Maria, who wanted to be a nun. She was sent to the house of Captain Von Trapp, where she grew to love him and his children. After the couple married, the family became a successful singing group and toured all over Europe. They escaped from Austria when the Nazis took over in 1938, and eventually arrived in the U.S.A., where they continued touring and became famous. The movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and stands as the most successful movie musical of all time. Carrie Underwood reprised the role on a live 2014 television production.
Each year, since the School began, eighth grade students have performed in a musical. Recent productions have included Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, Willy Wonka, Honk, Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz. This is Kent School’s first performance of The Sound of Music. This production is directed by Jim Landskroener with musical direction by Kate Bennett and art direction by Pat Parkhurst.
