The Chestertown Dancing Society hosted a dinner dance for forty-one Junior Cotillion participants on Friday, January 24th at the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. Seventh and eighth grade dancers, drawn from both Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties, enjoyed an hour of dancing under the watchful eyes of professionals Dr. and Mrs. Darryl and Lucia Calloway.
After dancing, participants were treated to a four-course meal instructed by Mrs. Georgina Bliss Marshall, Director of the Chestertown Dancing Society. Children were taught about both American and Continental dining traditions and the importance of respecting the customs of one’s host, no matter where they might be: in a private home or dining out in a restaurant. The children also participated in a Q and A: What is it? A baby or a Berry Spoon…..A Toast Holder or a Porringer?
The Board of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club has partnered with the Junior Cotillion for many years to help offset part of the cost of the winter diner/dance recognizing the importance of introducing young people to dining traditions and protocol. These valuable life skills will become useful tools throughout life in different dining situations.
“Etiquette is about making those around you feel comfortable. Children learn to adapt to a variety of situations giving them confidence,” remarks Georgina Bliss Marshall, the Junior Cotillion Director. “Etiquette is an old-fashioned word, but good manners never go out of style.”
The Children were great and had a wonderful time! Parent volunteers helped Junior Cotillion participants navigate the various methods of holding cutlery and enjoying their meals. It was a very successful event, and the cotillion thanks everyone involved, especially the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and all the volunteers!
