Top-ranked Salisbury University scored the first nine goals of the game en route to a 17-3 win over host Washington College in the annual “War on the Shore” for the Charles B. Clark Cup this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
The Sea Gulls (17-1) held a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and took a 9-0 lead when Sam Bradman scored off an assist from Shawn Zordani with 2:19 remaining in the first half. Bradman was the first Sea Gull with multiple goals in the game as their first eight goals were scored by eight different players. The Shoremen, who finish their season at 5-9, finally got on the board with 14 seconds left in the half on an unassisted goal by sophomore attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School). Salisbury outshot Washington, 33-8, in the first half.
The two teams traded goals to open the third quarter, but the Sea Gulls scored seven of the final eight goals of the contest to provide the final margin.
Bradman had a six-point day for Salisbury, scoring three goals and assisting on three others. Erik Krum added three goals and and one assist, while Tony Mendes scored three goals of his own. Matt Cannone and Kyle Quist each had two goals and two assists. Johnny Rodriguez played the first 36:18 of the game in goal for Salisbury, making five saves and allowing two goals.
Lewis, senior midfielder Shane Kaski (Mosley, VA/Midlothian), and sophomore midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) each scored one goal for the Shoremen. Junior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) made 15 saves in goal for the Shoremen while allowing 16 goals in the first 52:45 of the game.
Salisbury held a 54-25 advantage in shots in the game and won 14 of the game’s 24 face-offs.
Today’s game marked the first-ever “War on the Shore” to be broadcast on television as the game aired on Baltimore’s ABC 2 and was simulcast on ESPN3.com. An estimated crowd of over 2,800 fans attended the game inside the stadium or outside the fence on the north end of the field.
