Avant-garde folk-rocker and experimental singer-songwriter Marielle Allschwang comes to The Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland Saturday July 23 at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $15. For information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at the Mainstay’s website https://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
Marielle Allschwang has spent the last six years providing vocals, violin, guitar, and percussion for several bands in Milwaukee, WI including Group of the Altos, Hello Death, and Death Blues. She released her first solo album, Dead Not Done, last August on Gloss Records. Reviewers have commented on the gorgeous, delicate, dark, lilting melodies that swirl all over the record and the top-notch songwriting that gives it shape and form.
At The Mainstay, she will be accompanied by Adam Krause on guitar, bass, and saw, and Ken Palme on electric guitar.
As a second-generation American, Allschwang’s album tells not only personal stories, but the life experiences of her parents and grandparents, exploring feelings of sadness and strength, exile and identity. Her songs, although rooted in American folk traditions, warp and distort these established forms by coupling them with the experiments of the late 20th Century avant-garde and noise rock.
Her live solo performances have been lauded by the Milwaukee Record (“powerful, beautiful, intense, mind-blowing”) and Shepherd Express: “Marielle Allschwang does double duty in the bands Altos and Hello Death, but she’s a born natural solo performer as well, commanding the stage with hushed intensity.”
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street.
