Manhole Collapses on Cross Street

February 18, 2010 by Dennis Herrmann

The snow maybe melting, but it’s still wrecking havoc on town roads.

Chestertown Utilities Manager Bob Sipes reported to the Mayor and Council on Tuesday that a manhole on Cross Street had collapsed.

“The cover had popped out, the side walls and bricks had caved in … if one more truck had come through there they’d be stuck out there right now,” he said.

The manhole was not in use so Sipes and his crew removed it.

“We took everything out, the frame, the pipe, and went ahead and filled it in and patched it up.”

As the snow melts, Sipes is predicting more collapsed manholes and busted hydrants.

“We won’t know the affects from all the snow till it melts,” he said.
