After 18 years as a centerpiece of downtown’s retail presence, the Cornucopia Gift Shop on Cross Street will be closing this week.
Beverly Philipp, owner of the shop, says that the time is right for her to move on to other adventures—she refuses to use the word ‘retirement’— and although sad about the closure, looks to the future for the “next best thing.”
“It feels like a divorce,” she said. “My brother and I started this place together—he has since passed on—and it was my daily life finding and offering the things people came here for.”
The shop has long enjoyed popularity by tourists and residents alike.
A retirement closing sale to liquidate everything in the store including fixtures will be announced in the media and on the shop windows this week
Michael Kunca of G. A. Wright Co., experts in promotional and liquidation sales, will be organizing the sales. Kunca also helped closed out Paul’s Shoes.
“I will miss all the friends of made here these last 18 years. It’s been wonderful to be part of the community this way,” Philipp says.
The Spy wishes her the best of luck and thanks her for bringing her great taste in gifts and warmth to the Chestertown community.

An enormous void will be created. I have found to depend upon this wonderful store, personally, and something to brag about to those visiting Chestertown. A tremendous loss!

I remember well when Beverly and her brother, John August Sutton, opened Cornucopia. At that time, 18 years ago. my work took me to Chestertown frequently And it was at Cornucopia that I always found just the right gift. What a wonderful shop, what tasteful gifts, what unusual gifts. What a great undertaking for Beverly and John August. They created something very special for their customers and the town. Here’s to you, Beverly and your dear brother, John. Here’s to to a well-earned retirement and to wonderful memories and many Happy Days.
