Recovery International, a new peer-led support group for people struggling with stress, tension, anxiety, panic, fatigue, worry, sleep problems, feelings of helplessness and other emotional problems, is opening a chapter in Chestertown.
Recovery is a non-profit community service organization founded in 1937 by the late Abraham A. Low, M.D., who developed the self-help method after many years of research, study and treatment of patients. The organization has been completely member-managed since 1952. The international headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois and there are hundreds of groups meeting each week throughout North America and abroad.
There is no required fee to attend meetings. A voluntary collection is taken at each meeting. They accept and welcome people from all walks of life.
The method can be used on its own, or in conjunction with professional help or medication.
Members learn to identify and manage negative thoughts, reactions, beliefs and behaviors that lead to emotional pain and disturbing physical complaints which have no physical cause.
The first meeting will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday, July 11 at the Lutheran Church in Greenwood Ave. in Chestertown.
