This winter, RiverArts is offering a wide variety of classes to keep you warm and happy while the weather is cold and the days are short. Starting in January, we are offering four different series, featuring wool, the wheel, wood, wit and wisdom. As usual, classes are small to keep the student/ teacher ratio high, so sign up today. Classes can also be gifted to friends and family.
Betty Kerr is offering the opportunity for you to learn rug hooking at her Tall Timbers Studio on Airy Hill Road. Betty is a certified McGown instructor and her beautiful work has been shown in the RiverArts Gallery several times. This is a great way to create usable art for your home and help keep the planet green by recycling wool fabric. Classes start January 7 and run every week, from 10:00 AM to 3 PM until
February 4. (January 7, 14, 21, 28, and Feb 4.) Bring a bagged lunch. Cost for five sessions is $80.00.
Members pay $65.00.
Marilee Schumann is again teaching the Potter’s Wheel. See her original work at the Tree of Life Gallery, 312 Cannon Street, in Chestertown. You have your choice of attending her classes at the Clay Studio in Still Pond on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 PM or Wednesday mornings from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Winter session starts on January 14 and 15, and runs to March 4 and 5. Cost is $265.00. Members pay $230.00. Wear old clothes and be prepared to get a little dirty!
Vicco von Voss is offering a series of four woodworking workshops for beginners and intermediates at his studio, 145 Island Creek Road, Centreville, MD.
January 18: Layout and hand-cut mortise and tendon joinery. For those taking the whole series, this will be the session where you make the legs of a stool.
February 22: Layout and cutting of dovetails. If you are taking the whole series, you will be building a drawer for your stool during this session.
March 22: Using hand planes and scrapers. Those building a stool will do the top at this point.
April 19: Intended for those who have participated in the previous three workshops, this will be the day you assemble and complete your stool.
Each workshop goes from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a break for the lunch you packed. Cost per workshop is $175.00. Members pay $150.00. Save money and purchase the complete package – $525:00 for all four sessions. Members pay $450.00.
Last but certainly not least, Zane Carter is kicking off our Winter Wednesdays lecture series about the
creative spirit in all of us on Wednesday, January 15th as well as think, will feature Zane in January, Ron Fithian in February, Diane Landskroener in March, and Tom McHugh in April. These talks will be given in the RiverArts gallery from 5:00 to 6:00 PM. Cost will be $20.00 apiece, $15.00 for members. Come and learn what makes these people tick, and nurture the creative drive inside you and others.
