Up until the last minute, Centreville was going to be the Eastern Shore town where the producers of “Space,” the television mini-series based on the James Michener novel, wanted to film in 1984.
That was until then Mayor Elmer Horsey heard about it. The Mayor called the Director of the Maryland State Film Commission and asked him if a final decision had been made for the filming of SPACE. He said no … and the Mayor asked him if Chestertown could be considered.
The Film Commission Director suggested the Mayor meet personally with the Paramount Pictures director to see if he could get them to consider Chestertown for the filming. Mayor Horsey learned the Paramount entourage was in Centreville so he drove to Centreville, found their ‘bus’ and introduced himself to the Paramount people. He asked them if they would come and look at Chestertown before making a final decision regarding their filming location. They agreed and history was made.
See if you can identify the Chestertownians and the Hollywood stars from Tyler Campbell’s magnificent photos.

I see Mark Mumford, Mabel Mumford, Tyler Campbell, Elmer Horsey, maybe Elaine Bowman, and someone who looks a lot like Dominic West.

I see lots of familiar faces; it would be fun if the slide show could be paused and names inserted in each frame…
Editor says
Thanks Jared. We’ve changed the slideshow so you can pause. Sorry we can’t have people insert names, at least now.

I’ll add Earl Pinder several times, Rev Gregory Straub, present Mayor Margo Bailey, Shady Lane & Dudley Bostic, Paul Bowman & Vince Raimond, Mackie Streit twice, Barbara Cooper (now Gorrow) three times, Neil Brayton, Jack Diller, star Harry Hamlin, and a couple of not-real-sures: Shirley Murray and Andy Rengarts.

I see Margo Bailey, Hila Derringer, Marty Stetson, Paul Bowman, Vince Raimond, Greg Straub, Magill James, Earl Pinder, Betty Mooney, Mike Pelczar, Mackie Streit, Pat Moser, Barbara Gillian (and maybe her two daughters) and some all-out wonderful smashing lovely hats!

Here are a few that were unmentioned (forgive the name misspelling) Cackie White, Jack Diller, Both Courtney and Erin Gillin, Barb and Krista Abram, Jean Gillespie (?) Mrs. Audrey Newnam, Jim Quinn, Margaret Gretzinger (?), Gabriel, Gretchen and Susie Bright. The ? are two people I THINK I named correctly but may not have. That was so much fun to watch. When I got some time off from working in the cafeteria at WC for summer conferences, I walked down to see what was going on. My big memory was walking around corner and Micheal York running into me at a very fast pace. He was very apologetic and kind.

Come on you locals…and I’m a rookie in this town. How about Todd Smith and Tracy Landon?

If you look closely at Spy Flashback “Space”! As the slide show goes by keep your eyes open for a photo with a woman and man on the left (who is my mother Mary Jean and my father Monroe). The other clue the right photo is my mother and father appear to be looking at a man in dark pin strip suit whirring a fedora black hat he is on the right hand side.
Janice Dickson says
Yes, I did see Monroe, and now I see Mary Jean. Thanks, J.R.
