Sophomore midfielder Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) scored three goals and assisted on two others as host Washington College overcame a slow start to register a 9-6 Centennial Conference men’s lacrosse win over visiting Muhlenberg this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.
Muhlenberg (3-6, 1-3 Centennial) scored on its first three shots of the game to take a 3-0 lead on a goal by Corey Aferiat off an assist from Nick Rispoli with 12:24 left in the first quarter. The Shoremen (4-4, 2-2) then scored the final six goals of the half to build a 6-3 lead on a goal by Coyle with 57 seconds left in the second quarter.
Neither team scored in the third quarter. The Mules opened the fourth with a goal by Doug Rheiner with 12:50 remaining. The Shoremen answered with back-to-back goals, the second an extra-man tally by junior attackman Billy Stafford(White Hall, MD/Hereford) with 9:02 left in the game to give the Shoremen an 8-4 lead. The Mules would twice cut the lead back to three goals, but could get no closer.
Stafford (one goal and one assist) and sophomore attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School), who scored two goals, joined Coyle as multiple-point getters for the Shoremen. Rheiner had two goals to lead the Mule offense.
Washington junior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) and Muhlenberg goalie Mike Horowitz each had 15 saves between the pipes. Washington held a 39-37 advantage in shots in the game. Muhlenberg won 13 of the game’s 18 face-offs.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Ursinus.
