For better or worse, one of the few barriers that keep some from coming over to the Eastern Shore is the sheer terror of driving over the Bay Bridge. Technically known as gephyrophobia, this fear of bridges is the invisible gate the makes thousands abruptly make u-turns on Route 50 rather than face what Washington Post contributing columnist Damon Young calls the “shoulderless demon named the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.”
