Haven Ministries is hosting Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Training on November 3, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Higher Education Center at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD. The presenter is from a nonprofit organization out of Florida called Polis Institute (polisinstitute.org), who specializes in helping organizations align resources and citizens to positively change their communities. ABCD Training, which originated in the 1990s out of Northwestern University, leverages the strengths and talents of a community to address its concerns. Specifically, the training offers tools to identify positive assets in neighborhoods struggling with community issues in order for citizens to use these assets to transform their own communities.
Polis Institute champions human dignity by designing solutions to the social problems that infringe upon it. Their current efforts are focused on revitalizing distressed communities in order to alleviate the burden of concentrated poverty. This ABCD Training enables individual lives to be enriched through better relationships and networks, and by attaining new skills, greater purpose, and more hope. According to Krista Pettit, executive director of Haven Ministries, “The training is open to anyone in our community. It offers us all the opportunity to learn about effective tools to revitalize our communities – helping families move out of poverty and creating healthy and prosperous lives.”
Haven Ministries is offering this training to everyone in the community and CEUs are available. The cost of the training is for $85 (an additional $10 will be added for those wanting CEUs). The cost of the trainings covers the presenter, a light breakfast, lunch, and all materials. Seating is limited. Tickets are available at the Event Brite.
