In Memoriam: Ann Wilmer Hoon

August 4, 2016 by The Spy

Share

It is with great sadness that the Spy must inform the greater Chestertown community that long time community leader, Democratic party activist, and secondary school educator, Ann Wilmer Hoon passed away at Heron Point last night.

The only daughter of the legendary former Chestertown mayor, Philip Wilmer, Ann was part of an eight generation family of Kent County natives (starting with Stepney Manor).  She and her husband, Sandy, returned to Chestertown and Thornton, their family farm, after serving as dean and headmistress at independent schools in Pittsburgh.

The Spy did a interview with Ann in 2012 when she recalled her youth in Chestertown.

No announcements have yet been made regarding funeral services.

An icon, a compassionate heart and above all else. a lady.
It is an honor to have known her.

I first met Ann Wilmer Hoon when she was covering the Kent County Commissioners during the mid-1980s for the League of Women Voters. I was a reporter at the time, first at the Kent County News and later at The Pilot. She was a great teacher of Kent County history. Like her husband, Sandy, and her sons, Phil and David, she was a local dynamo of energy, concerned about preserving the memory of the region’s past and preparing us for the future. It was an honor to know her.

Loved Ann Hoon! What a force she was in every endeavor.
I only wish she had lived to see her hero HRC sworn in as the
    first female POTUS!!

Ann Hoon was one of the loveliest people I have met in Chestertown. She was a regular at Play it Again Sams when we owned it and her daily order of a PB and J with a glass of milk always made me smile. she would remind us that it was the lunch she always shared with her children. Pete always complimented her on her hair the days she had come from the salon and she was hilarious when she would tell him to stop flirting. She was an institution and will be missed.

This is exactly the same memory I have of her: PB&Js, glasses of milk, and Pete flirting shamelessly. I’m so sad to hear of her passing. RIP Miss Ann!

She was a force to be reckoned with — and so stylish. I can still see her marching down High Street in high heels and red dress, shoulders back, head held high.

What a treasure she was! We enjoyed her immensely and will miss her…….so full of life …willing to do anything and everything. And not a bad bridge player!

Ann came into my eyeglass shop for years and always kibbutz with me. She always said to me as I pulled out her records, “make sure that you have them filed as Ann Wilmer-Hoon not just Hoon.” I will greatly miss her visits to my office.

Ann Wilmer-Hoon always made me smile. I am sadden by her passing. I enjoyed her interview that was embedded in this article. I wish it was longer because I could listen to her stories all day long. I love you Ann! I will always cherish the ongoing joke we had together over Sandy…I always kidded her that Sandy was going to be my next husband and she would always say, “No I’m not done with him yet.” I always enjoy seeing true love and those two were truly blessed.

Ann was one of the first people I met in Chestertown. I loved her immediately. She was so pretty and such fun. She loved to tell me how lucky Kirk, my husband, and I were to be living in Chestertown and on her beloved Water Street. She and I also shared a love of cats. She was such a role model for women —- an activist. She will be missed.
