Chuck Redd and his quartet featuring his brother Robert Redd on piano, bassist Romeir Mendez and Wesley Anderson on drums, pay tribute to three iconic jazz vibraphone players that have had a profound influence on Chuck and probably every other vibraphone player on the planet: Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson and Terry Gibbs. The Quartet will perform music closely associated with all three of these jazz vibes virtuosos, an evening of swing, ballads, a little be bop and some American Popular Song classics.
Along with brother Robert Redd, a Mainstay favorite who has been touring with the Duke Ellington Jazz Orchestra on piano, Redd is pleased to present two young musicians: the Baltimore based bassist Romeir Mendez who performs at major jazz venues in DC and Baltimore and has toured internationally with Warren Wolf and Donald Harrison and drummer Wesley Anderson from Los Angeles who recently began working with The U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, the premier Army touring jazz big band.
Lionel Hampton introduced the world to the Vibraphone when he became a member of the Benny Goodman Quartet. Milt Jackson transcended the possibilities of the instrument with his ability to “sing” through the instrument when playing ballads and blues. The legendary Terry Gibbs, is a bebop and swing master who became a household name when he was musical director for the Steve Allen and Regis Philbin television shows. Redd is honored to call Gibbs a good friend – at age 92, Terry Gibbs is still very active, energetic and witty.
Chuck Redd is well known internationally as a performer on drums and vibraphone. He began recording and touring the globe when he joined the Charlie Byrd Trio at the age of 21 and was a member of the Great Guitars (Barney Kessel, Byrd and Herb Ellis.) To his credit are 25 European tours and six tours of Japan. He served as Artist-In-Residence at The Smithsonian Jazz Café in Washington, DC from 2004-2008.
Chuck Redd was featured vibraphonist with the Mel Torme All-Star Jazz Quintet from 1991 until 1996. While appearing in New York with Torme, Ira Gitler of Jazz Times said: “Redd’s vibes were equally notable for vigor and melodiousness.” Jazz Times also has praised Redd’s vibes work as “Exquisite!” The Washington Post and Hot House Magazine recently admired his “melodic sparkle.”
In 2007, Redd was featured with the prestigious Milt Jackson Tribute Band. Recent engagements include jazz cruises, stints with Bucky Pizzarelli and Ken Peplowski at Dizzy’s Club (Jazz at Lincoln Center) performances at Smalls in New York City and jazz festivals around the US. He has toured and performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme, Tommy Flanagan, Bill Mays, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Laurindo Almeida, Tal Farlow, Rebecca Kilgore, Scott Hamilton, Mickey Roker and Houston Person.
Redd is featured on over 75 recordings. Releases include his Arbors CD, “All This and Heaven Too”, featuring Gene Bertoncini and George Mraz, Chopin Jazz with Rossano Sportiello “You’re My Everything” with Dick Hyman and Jay Leonhart and “Nice N’ Easy” with Houston Person. He can also be heard on the sound track to the popular television series, “The Great Chefs”, and the NPR broadcast “Jazz Smithsonian.”
His Arbors CD “Happy All The Time,” is a critically acclaimed tribute to his mentor, Barney Kessel and features Monty Alexander and Jeff Hamilton and his Noteworthy CD, “When Redd is Blue” is a collaboration with his brother, pianist Robert Redd, featuring saxophonist Harry Allen. Chuck’s newest release, “The Common Thread” features Mickey Roker, Bob Cranshaw, Houston Person and Rossano Sportiello.
Redd frequently performs in New York City and tours nationally at festivals and clubs. He is on the faculty at The University of Maryland School of Music and presents master classes, workshops and lectures around the country.
