As part of National Diabetes Awareness Month, University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology has announced a busy and exciting schedule of educational and support opportunities, including three events in Chestertown
Kent County is one of four Maryland counties reporting a diabetes rate exceeding 9 percent. Says diabetes educator Chrissy Nelson, BSN, RN, CDE. “As Diabetes Awareness Month, November is an opportunity to share information and assistance to the community that will help reduce the prevalence of this serious disease and also enable those who are diagnosed to avoid serious complications and maintain their best health.”
Nelson and Mary King, RD, CDE, nutrition services coordinator for UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown have planned the following free events:
Keep Calm and Shop On — Join Mary King at Redner’s Market on Thursday, November 12, 2:30-4 p.m., to learn how to makes sure your grocery cart has the “right stuff” to maintain your best. Ask a Dietitian! Talk one-one one (in person or by phone), with registered dietitians about your dietary concerns related to diabetes, weight management and many other health issues. “Ask a Dietition! is.set for Wednesday, November 18, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at UM SMC at Chestertown Cafeteria Meeting Room. Diabetes Support Group– This Month’s support group meeting is open to regular members and all diabetes patients and family members who have not attended in the past but are interested in learning how a support group can benefit them.
