The Sultana Education Foundation’s Downrigging Weekend Tall Ship and Wooden Boat Festival; scheduled for October 29 – November 1 in Chestertown, Maryland; will receive a major upgrade to its fireworks show for 2015. Thanks to financial support from two local businesses, Occasions Catering and the Chestertown River Packet Company, as well as logistical support from Washington College, the Downrigging fireworks show will showcase larger shells, similar in size to those used for Chestertown’s July 4th celebration. This year’s Downrigging Weekend fireworks show will begin at 8:30pm on Friday, October 30 and will be visible along the entire Chestertown Waterfront. The show will run for approximately 15 minutes.
Long a highlight of the four-day Festival, the Downrigging fireworks show is unique in the mid-Atlantic, featuring historic Chestertown’s 300 year-old harbor with its docks filled to the brim with a fleet of illuminated historic ships. The display typically attracts thousands of visitors, including a significant number of professional and amateur photographers. In advance of the show, the Downrigging Weekend fleet will be illuminated beginning at dusk, and there will be concerts, exhibits and other special events throughout Chestertown’s historic downtown.
Now in its 15th year, Downrigging Weekend is one of the largest annual Tall Ship gatherings in North America, featuring four days of Tall Ship sails, deck tours, concerts, lectures, films and exhibits.
