The Campbell Brothers Trio will present an evening of sacred steel music: a soul-stirring blend of gospel and blues – heaven and heathen- on Friday, September 11, 8 pm at the Garfield Center for the Arts in Chestertown. Expect to hear a compelling, rich variety of material drawn from the African-American Pentecostal repertoire with a twist – the growling, wailing, shouting, singing and swinging voice of dueling steel guitars.
The band has won numerous awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts, played with everyone from Johnny Lang to Sonny Landreth, and performed everywhere from the Kennedy Center to the Playboy Jazz Fest to Houses of God. Brothers Chuck, pedal steel, Darick, lap steel, and Phillip, electric guitar, have been together for over two decades. Chuck began playing at age 12, and is known for his innovative ability to imitate the human voice, evoking images of gospel moaning and field singing. Darick is billed as the most emotional player in the group, with Phillip’s guitar doing double duty with melody and driving rhythm. He is also an accomplished gospel songwriter. Their high energy and passion dare you to wave your hands and stomp your feet. The Garfield Center dance floor will be open. . For more information on the band visit www.campbellbrothers.com.
The Campbell Brothers concert is the fourth of six in the second annual Chestertown Blues Series. Additional concerts in the blues series include the ever popular boogie-woogie pianist and saxophonist Deanna Bogart performing October 9, and guitar virtuoso, swamp blues aficionado Damon Fowler rounds out the series on November 13.
