June 9, 2015 by RiverArts

On Friday, June 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Chestertown RiverArts celebrated the opening of the judged show “The Artist’s Touch.” The show features paintings and sculptures that best represent how the artists express their views of the world. Artists submitted works on many different themes including portraits, landscapes, and abstract pieces.

boatThe well-known artist, writer and educator Barbara Nuss judged the show. She has exhibited throughout the US and in Europe, including solo exhibitions in Washington, D.C. and New York.  Recently two of her paintings exhibited at Artie Amicitiae in Amsterdam, Holland.  Barbara has written for North Light books and for The Artist Magazine; see her latest article in the Jan/ Feb issue.  Her awards are too numerous to print here but readers are encouraged to visit her website at www.barbaranuss.com

Steve Bleinberger was awarded first place for his watercolor “Marshland.” The painting depicts a tall ship over a landscape of marshland. Of his painting, Nuss said “The painting has the best design and composition. It is well drawn and interesting. The watercolor is beautifully handled, especially in the sky. I like the decked edge and the overall presentation.”

Second place was awarded to Cheryl Schlenker for her mixed-media piece “Alley Market.” Nuss note the good use of complementary colors as well as the effectiveness of the foreground, middle ground, and background in her decision. The piece depicts a market scene in vibrant colors.

Jody Primoff was awarded third place for her work “Falling Water.” Done in pastel, Nuss based this choice on the strong sense of design and “good harmonious color.” The painting depicts a waterfall, which Nuss noted is well painted.

Honorable mention was awarded to Donna Winterling for her watercolor “Morning Sun.” This painting depicts a child in the morning sun. Of the work Nuss states, “This painting has good composition and is well drawn. It is ambitious to paint children in watercolor, and the artists has pulled it off.”

The winning works, along with the other submissions to the show are available to view and to purchase at RiverArts Gallery at 315 High Street, Suite 106 in Chestertown. The gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, call 410-778-6300 or visit www.chestertownriverarts.org.
