More prizes and surprises have been added to the June 7 “Family Fun Day for Savvy Cycling” at Wilmer Park. Opening at noon for families to bring picnic lunches, the event will feature bike safety tips, a bike rodeo, bike maintenance and repair experts, along with family games, a helmet giveaway, and raffles including a child’s bike and an afternoon cruise for two on The Chester River Packet Boat.
Experts will answer bikers’ questions and provide information on how to stay safe, as well as how to take care of their bikes, adjust seats and handlebars, proper helmet-fitting, how to change flat tires, and just about any question young bikers and adult riders need answered.
Bikes with training wheels and their young riders are equally as welcome as their older friends who no longer need training wheels.
Bikers must present signed parent/guardian permission in order to enter the Bike Rodeo and ride the Skills and Hazard courses. Youngsters without permission slips or bikes may walk the Skills and Hazard courses and be eligible for the same free helmet and prize as those who ride.
Raffle tickets for a child’s bike and an afternoon cruise for two on the Chester River Packet Boat will be available during the afternoon. Drawing will take place at 2:45. In addition, the Chestertown Recreation Commission has donated raffle prizes of a $25 gift certificate and a $75 gift certificate redeemable at Chesapeake Bike and Paddle.
The “Family Fun Day for Savvy Cycling” is a community outreach program of the Democratic Club.
Organizers of the June 7 event request leaving the family dogs at home. They expect a lot of activity from one end of Wilmer Park to the other. “We don’t want anyone or a dog to be injured,” said Francie Miller, organizer of the Fun Day committee.
In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled on Sunday July 5 at Wilmer Park from noon to 3:30 p.m.
