Decisions, decisions.
With thousands of square feet filled with artifacts, as well as a fleet of historic boats to choose from, how does a curator pick the top fifty objects to represent the remarkable range of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum? With five decades as the regional depository of some of the Eastern Shore’s most important examples of shipbuilding, art, crafts, and historic documents, this was no easy task.
It was up to Pete Lesher to make those judgment calls, but one couldn’t think of anyone better qualified to do so. With a lifelong love of all things maritime, history degrees from Lafayette College and Columbia University, and close to twenty-four years of service to CBMM, Lesher might have been the only one to take up this challenge.
In his interview with the Spy, Pete talks about the work that has gone into the 50th Anniversary exhibition, “A Broad Reach: 50 Years of Collecting“, and highlights a few of the objects that will be on display.
