On Sunday, April 12, 10 AM, Sybil Wolin, Ph.D., will present a sermon entitled “In Loving Hands: Caring for Our Own when Death Occurs” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. Death is a call to the living. It asks us individually and as a community to know what we are willing and able to do for others who are experiencing a loss. In this talk, Sybil Wolin will describe how her own spiritual community serves members when death occurs. Dr. Wolin led the effort to establish a bereavement committee at Adas Israel Congregation in Washington, D.C. She chaired the committee for ten years and represented the congregation ion the Greater Washington Funeral Practices Committee.
Dr. Wolin will share her inspiration for working with the bereaved. She will describe how she and others educated themselves, developed committee policies and procedures, created checklists, organized and trained volunteers who, over time, came to be know as haverim, Hebrew for “friends of the bereaved.”
This will be an opportunity for us at UUCR to consider our response to death and bereavements as we learn the practices of other faith communities. We hope you can join us.
Religious programs for children and youth will be available, as well as childcare for infants and toddlers. Please call 410-778-3440 for more information.
