Auditions for the Garfield Center for the Arts’ June production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will be held on Sunday, March 15 at 2pm, Tuesday, March 17 at 7pm and Thursday, March 19 at 7pm.
Set in the family farmhouse in rural Bucks County, PA, Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia ruminate over their lives, full of angst and regret and the alarmingly ambiguous prophecies of their housekeeper. Enter their sister, the self-centered movie star Masha, along with her “boy toy” Spike, and the stage is set absurd weekend of unexpected and hilarious consequences.
Wickedly funny, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is richly laced with the Chekhovian themes of relationships and yearnings, as well as the characters namesakes. According to the playwright, Christopher Durang, ” The play is not based on Chekhov, nor is it a parody of Chekhov. Chekhov is more of a personal jumping -off point for me. It’s as if I took characters and themes from Chekhov and put them in a blender.” Winner of the Tony for Best play in 2013, Durang delivers a kind of delicious comic exaggeration that falls between mischief and mayhem.
Director Bonnie Hill is seeking a cast of four Women – ages 20 – 60; and two Men – ages 21 – 60. Familiarity with the play is helpful, but not necessary. Come prepared to do cold readings from the script.
Performances are scheduled for two weekends: June 19 -21 and June 26 -28, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, and Sundays at 3PM.
