Dr. Karen Couch, Superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, will update the public on progress toward her goals at an open meeting 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 in the Chestertown Town Hall. The Kent County League of Women Voters is sponsoring the event.
The schools chief has led the system of about 900 students, smallest in Maryland, since July, 2013
In a presentation in October of that year, Dr. Couch announced goals of improving attendance, achievement on standardized tests and graduation rates. Her administration had already won a grant of $400,000 to enhance technology in classrooms, particularly for math and science.
Her plans focused on a number of approaches, including improved teacher performance, acquiring up-to-date textbooks, and recruiting mentors for children who needed them. In order to help pay for such initiatives, Dr. Couch eliminated three administrative positions.
The superintendent had previously won honors for leading a shrinking rural school district in Arizona.
Following her talk, Dr. Couch will answer questions from the audience.
