On December 3rd, a group from The Gunston School traveled to Indianapolis to participate in the three-day Student Diversity Leadership/People of Color Conference, hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools.
At the conference, which focuses on making students aware of diversity issues as well as how to cultivate a positive school climate, students and teachers participated in themed-dialogue sessions, attended workshops and heard nationally-renowned speakers such as Michael Eric Dyson and Sonia Nazario (author of the National Book Award-winning “Enrique’s Journey”).
Participating students included Korren Campbell, Tyler Urquhart, Kailani Clarke, Kejing Jin, Jack Wilson, Yohanes Gray and Neel Patel. Natalie Purpora (a junior) and Alison Vooris (Director for Global Programs at Gunston) were invited to work as facilitators. The students, many of whom belong to Gunston’s Student Diversity Leadership Group, have returned with a passion for making positive changes in the school and the desire to serve as school leaders.
