When the New Yorker magazine proclaims that Susan Werner “brings literacy and wit back to popular song,” it’s rather high praise for this innovative songwriter, the daughter of an Iowa farmer, set to hit the stage at the Avalon this coming Friday night.
Her previous versatile albums have addressed, among other things, themes of religion and faith (The Gospel Truth), combined jazz and folk and gospel (Live at Club Passim), and explored the down-to-earth lives of farmers in last year’s concept album Hayseed.
Now she’s composed a new musical based on Bull Durham, the steamy story of three lives brought together by America’s two favorite pastimes: baseball and romance.
Catch her while you can.
