During the town council meeting on Monday, November 17, Chestertown Utilities Manager Bob Sipes reported the unauthorized use of town water.
Sipes said that someone has been siphoning off water from fire hydrants—recently from the Washington Square Shopping Center area—and that the unauthorized use of town water amounted to theft. He suggested people be on the lookout, take a cellphone photo of the vehicle if possible, and call 410-708-4603 if they see anyone other than town utilities personnel using the hydrants.
While extracting a hundred gallons of water is not a large monetary loss, Sipes said, back-pressure from the hoses and containers used during the theft can disturb the main holding tanks enough for the town to have to flush 200,000 gallons out of its system.
Sips explains the situation in the following short clip.
