Middle School students at Kent School completed their Field Hockey and Soccer seasons hosting Sts. Peter and Paul on October 30. The girls’ field hockey defeated their opponents from Talbot County with a 5-0 win. That win ensured that the Ospreys tallied a season with no defeats for the first time in at least 15 years. Sarah Caron, 8th grade goalie said, “The cohesion between the defense and the midfield was effortless and it made it so much easier to move the ball up the field” to score. Head coach and athletic director Erin Kent, said, “It was an honor to work with such enthusiastic and talented girls. They came to practice and to games ready to work and it really paid off. I am so happy for them.”
Kent School’s co-ed soccer team did not have as much success in the win column as the hockey team. On the season, eighth grade soccer goalie Will Cammerzell said, “Although we didn’t have any wins, we did not lose our spirit and determination. We had new coaches this year and we learned a lot. The best thing that came out of this season is the promising fifth and sixth grade players that will make up a great team in the years to come.” Athletic Director Kent continued, “This was not an easy season for our soccer team. Their grace, drive and sportsmanship from start to finish was admirable. I am so proud that they worked together and supported each other through some tough moments. Regardless of the record, these kids are great role models.”
Kent School students have the option to participate in interscholastic athletics beginning in the fifth grade. Co-ed soccer and field hockey are offered in the fall; boys’ and girls’ basketball is offered in the winter; and boys’ and girls’ lacrosse is offered in the spring. Kent School’s interscholastic athletics program is designed to foster a competitive and age-appropriate atmosphere. The program promotes physical fitness, good sportsmanship, skill development and personal responsibility. While students are encouraged to set individual goals, the school’s primary goals for every child are to contribute to the team and to have fun.
Kent School’s headmaster Chris Gorycki said, “I could not be more proud of our field hockey and soccer players. Both teams had experiences that represent our core values of respect, integrity, responsibility and friendship. Win or lose, it is a joy to see our students share high fives with their teammates and coaches. I firmly believe in the added value of interscholastic athletics. Participation in school sports prepares them for success in high school and preserves good memories of their time at Kent School.”
