On Sun, November 9, 10 AM, Dr. David Newell will present a sermon entitled “Lifeboat Ethics” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. Lifeboat ethics is a metaphor, proposed by Garrett Hardin, for resource distribution. The metaphor describes a lifeboat bearing 50 people, with room for ten more. The lifeboat is in an ocean surrounded by a hundred swimmers. The ethical question is whether (and under what circumstances) more swimmers should be taken aboard the lifeboat? Lifeboat Ethics has implications for the environment, foreign aid, immigration, food banks, etc.
