Award winning children’s book author, Margie Palatini will be at Kent School on Wednesday, October 22 for a workshop with Little School and Lower School students. Palatini is the author of over three dozen popular and award-winning books for children including Sweet Tooth, BedHead and the Bad Boys series. She made her picture book debut with Piggie Pie which is now a bestselling favorite among children and their parents alike. The author has been honored with hundreds of awards and her books are recognized for the distinctive voice that Palatini uses that gets kids of all ages laughing and living language.
According to Palatini’s website, “Learning through whole language is meaningful and fun.” She writes using an ‘L3 Pyramid’ with Language and Learning at the base of the pyramid and Learning at the top. The result is lively wordplay that engages readers and listeners. According to an article published in “The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books”, Palatini’s use of “puns, allusions, and wink-wink, nudge-nudge humor ensure that, whatever the story, the reader or listener can be assured of a giggle-inducing ride.”
Each year, Kent School hosts an acclaimed visiting author as part of the school’s Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers Program. Palatini joins a long list of visiting writers including Nick Bruell, Priscilla Cummings, Wendy Mass, Jack Gantos and Mary Downing Hahn. Kent School’s program began in 2000 as a memorial to two alumni, Ariana Kudner ‘91 and Amanda Leyon ‘91 who lost their lives in a car accident. Program founder, Chris McClary and classmate of Ariana and Amanda said, “The Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers program is a fitting tribute to both girls who shared a love of books, writing and literature. I know that they would be pleased that we are offering such a high quality program to our students and students from other area schools who attend.” The program is funded through the generosity of individuals and through a grant from the Arthur Kudner Fund of the Mid-Shore Community Foundation.
Kent School is an independent school located in Chestertown serving boys and girls from pre-k through grade 8. For more information about the Kudner Leyon Visiting Writers Program or Kent School visit www.kentschool.org or call 410-778-4100 ext. 110.
