Candidates for the Kent County Board of Education took part in a public forum Thursday sponsored by the Kent County League of Women Voters. The KCLWV asked the six candidates three questions as part of the two-hour program.
Candidates for the three seats on the five-member board include incumbents Michael Harvey, a college professor, and Jeff Reed, a school administrator, are seeking new terms. The challengers for seats on the board are: Wendy Costa, retired educator and current staff at the Mt. Harmon Plantation; Nivek Johnson, student at Chesapeake College and participant in Diversity Dialogue; Trish McGee, associate editor of the Kent County News; and longtime education reporter; and Linda Reed, a retired school nurse.
All terms on the board are for four years. The position pays an annual salary of $2,000.
Question One: What does the job of being a member of the Kent County school board entail, and what are your particular qualifications for carrying out these duties?
Question Two: Please state your opinion about the Common Core program, and explain your reasons for supporting, or not supporting, the program?
Question Three: Please state your opinion, either for or against, and why, of Comptroller Peter Franchot’s petition drive to have Maryland public schools should begin after Labor Day?
