This year’s Annual Academy Art Museum Craft Show on October 17, 18, and 19, 2014 in Easton, MD, has something for everyone. In its 17th year, this year’s theme, “Get Back to Your Roots: Shop Early for An American-Made Holiday,” will feature hand-made home accessories like oil painted rugs and blown glass, to fine crafted furniture, to wearable art. New this year, are artist talks, demonstrations, featured artists, and ManneqART.
The Show’s artist talks and demonstrations will be presented by the Show’s juried artists. The lectures are held each morning in the Museum’s Second Floor Painting Studio before the Craft Show opens. In addition to the artist talks, there will be demonstrations by juried artists in the afternoons of both days.
Three unique exhibitors were chosen this year to be the Show’s non-juried featured artists. Wood artist, Tom Yates of Kent Island, MD, will display his tree sculptures outside the Museum. These sculptures, made from fallen trees that have been tossed and weathered by Mother Nature, are highly unique and individual wood carvings. Inside the Museum entrance, The MidShore Woodworkers’ Guild (www.mswwguild.org) will display pieces from its members and will demonstrate all day in the Museum’s courtyard. The Guild, which has over 65 members, will exhibit wooden objects ranging from dramatic furniture pieces to model boats and guitars.
Both the Waterfowl Building and the Museum will showcase finely-crafted tapestries by Ulrika Leander (www.Ctw-tapestry.com) From her studio in Royal Oak, MD, she incorporates traditional weaving skills with modern expressions of her feelings, visions and artistry. New to the Academy Craft Show, this year, is a one-of-a-kind local display of several interpretive costumes from a Maryland organization called ManneqART. The organization focuses on the introduction of all aspects of wearable art to the general public. Six outstanding costume pieces will be on display throughout the Show. All of these costumes are made in America and showcase the artists’ visions while engaging the viewer to reimagine fashion in an exciting new way. Finally, for the littlest crafters, the Craft Show will offer children the opportunity to do their own hour-long craft projects in the Museum’s painting studio from noon to 4 p.m. each day while their parents explore and shop at the show. Pre-registration is required.
The hours for the Craft Show are Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 19, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Artist Lectures will be given on Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. Daily admission to the Craft Show is $10 per person. There will be special lunches and snacks available at the Downhome Barbeque and Café. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to purchase beautiful, one-of-a-kind American made gifts for holiday giving or even yourself. The Craft Show is one of two major fundraisers for the Museum and an easy way to support its many community-based exhibitions, programs and educational opportunities for all ages. The Museum is grateful for the support of the business community which has increased dramatically for the event.
