Unitarian Universalists Take on Fracking September 14

September 11, 2014 by Unitarian Universalists

Share

On Sun, September 14, 10 AM, Ms. Lisa Bardack will give a talk entitled “Is Fracking Worth Its Weight in Gas? Weighing the Facts and Moral Consequences of Hydraulic Fracturing in Maryland and Beyond” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. High-volume, slick water hydraulic fracturing, a natural gas extraction process also known as fracking, may be coming to Maryland in 2014 when the current moratorium ends. Dominion Resources of Virginia is poised to turn their dormant liquid natural gas (LNG) import facility into an LNG export facility in southern Maryland on “our” Chesapeake Bay.

What risks does this pose for the Bay and its environs? This talk will look at the basic facts about fracking and Dominion Cove Point and their potential ramifications on the safety of our drinking water, air and citizens. Fracking is already occurring in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, among many other states, and its economic, environmental and public health impacts are being documented. Does this energy extraction process align with the fundamental principles of justice for all and respect for the interdependence of all life? Does it protect the natural resources upon which life depends? Does it honor our obligation to children and future generations, to leave the world a better place than we found it?

Lisa Bardack is a writer and environmental educator currently focused on the moral implications inherent in fossil fuel energy extraction.

Childcare and children’s programs will be available. A new church year begins — Please call for more information at 410-778-3440 or email [email protected].
