RiverArts and the Chester River Association invite all artists to submit work for the first annual Art of Stewardship juried art exhibition, which will run from Thursday, November 6 through Saturday, November 29. Curated by CRA President and renowned Chester River artist, Marcy Ramsey, the show focuses on the artist as an environmental activist in stewarding our Earth.
Marcy’s call for artists challenges us to think about our stewardship:
“What do you care deeply about?
Stewardship is the act of caring for whatever has been entrusted to us. When you care about something you do your best to preserve and protect it. In this exhibit we are challenging you to look at the world around you through this lens. You could consider the meaning of “environment” as including the whole ecosystem but you can also narrow your focus to your immediate environment, for example your own town, yard or garden. The protection of this fragile world is a responsibility we all should share, and conveying that idea in art is at the heart of this exhibit. The essence of all good art is the good “idea” behind it. In this sense all art is conceptual, so come up with an idea first, and then use your creativity to express it in the most eloquent form possible in whatever medium you choose. You can combine media, or collaborate with another artist, but essentially this show is a way for you to express what you care most for in your world – what is worth preserving and protecting in your life. Be brave! Think outside the box! Find a great way to communicate your Great Idea that will promote good stewardship of our poor beleaguered planet.”
Artists may create work in any 2- or 3-dimensional medium from traditional to contemporary using a variety of techniques and imaginative interpretations. The judges – Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, founder and director of the American Visionary Art Museum and Greg Mort, internationally acclaimed environmental artist – will evaluate artwork on both thematic and artistic excellence. Artists may submit three pieces of work.
