William Brockschmidt, Mike Heffron, and Cheryl Vauls were selected as new RiverArts Board Members at the second Annual Meeting since the Arts League and Artworks merger in April of 2012. The new board members bring an array of experiences and much expertise to the table.
Cheryl Vauls has an extensive education background with over 40 years working with students and teachers. She has been a teacher and principal in Anne Arundel County and is the previous principal of Garnett Elementary School in Kent County. Under her leadership, Garnett won the “most improved Judy Center partnership” award at the Judith P. Hoyer Foundation awards luncheon in 2013 and an HUSSC award for the school nutrition program. Cheryl was also a Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast keynote speaker. Her message, “Keeping the Dream Alive for the Next Generation” explored the ways parents, educators, and community members can work to fulfill Dr. King’s dream through investing in young people.
Mike Heffron has served as a project manager and logistics engineer for a number of companies including Bionetic Corporation, InAir, LaFrance Corp and FirstGroup America. He has a strong track record of managing complex logistics system projects, developing support data products and managing customer expectations to ensure overall satisfaction. Mike Heffron provided the leadership and much labor for the renovation of the KidSPOT space.
William Brockschmidt began his career in the arts in both theater and television production. He next added a career in software design which continues to this day with a consulting business and contracts with the Maryland State Department of Education and the National Wildlife Federation among others. In 2005 he added real estate to his line of careers and currently works with Doug Ashley Realtors. William has served as one of RiverArts Exhibition Chairs this past year.
At the Annual Meeting, president Lani Seikaly reviewed highlights of the previous year saying that it had been a very good year for RiverArts with the hiring of the first executive director, Diane Landskroener, the opening of KidSPOT, a hands-on creativity center next door to the RiverArts galleries, and the selection of RiverArts as the best non-profit group on the Eastern Shore in the June edition of What’s Up Eastern Shore Magazine. A PowerPoint presentation highlighting RiverArts’ second year is viewable on the RiverArts website (ChestertownRiverArts.org) in the About Us section with the Board information.
