CHESTERTOWN, MD—The Washington College Riverfront Concert Series returns to Chestertown for summer 2014 with three Thursday evening concerts on June 19, July 3, and July 17. Starting each evening at 6:30 p.m. on the Custom House lawn at the corner of Water and High Streets, these summer concerts are free and open to the public. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs and blankets, and enjoy an evening of family fun. Free lemonade and cookies will be provided.
The series kicks off Thursday, June 19 with a rollicking performance by the Baltimore-based band, The Bumper Jacksons. Wielding washboard, clarinet, guitar, bass, pedal steel, and “The Suitcase” full of percussion instruments, the group offers a high energy level, varied instrumentation, and intelligent repertoire that sets them apart from other groups. Powerful vocal harmonies characterize their sound, as they slide seamlessly between street jazz, early blues, old time, and country swing.
On Thursday, July 3, the holiday weekend starts with a family-style concert by Them Eastport Oyster Boys. Recognized as Musical Goodwill Ambassadors to the City of Annapolis, the Maritime Republic of Eastport, and the Chesapeake, the bandmembers love to share their musical celebration of life on the shores of the Chesapeake with audiences of all ages. For more than two decades they have educated, amused, and delighted thousands with their wit, wisdom and special message of stewardship and appreciation for the Bay and its unique maritime culture.
Rounding out the series on Thursday, July 17,is the dynamic duo of Victoria Vox on the ukulele and Katie Chambers on cello. Vox, a six-time WAMMIE winner (Washington Area Music Awards), has been honing her songwriting and voice for the past decade, performing across the U.S. and around the globe. Katie Chambers, who first picked up a cello at the age of 12, has performed with numerous orchestras throughout the East Coast. She is the founder of Kinship Music Studios in Annapolis. For an unforgettable musical evening, be sure to catch this highly creative “uke-pop” performance.
