At its May 14 meeting, the Board of Trustees of the Kent County Public Library unanimously approved the hiring of Globus Design Associates, a firm that specializes in library renovations, to design an updated interior for the main library in Chestertown.
The Kent County Library’s mission is to provide a welcoming environment with a knowledgeable staff, robust resources, access to emerging technologies, and innovative services.
The library has been awarded a State Grant, to be matched by the County, to replace the circulation desk in the Chestertown Branch. Jackie Adams, Library Director, said, “The new circulation desk will be the hub of an overall redesign that will accommodate new technologies, enhance library spaces, and encourage collaboration, social interaction, and reading enjoyment.”
Suzan Globus, Principal of Globus Design Associates, will hold meetings in the library to review in detail the programmatic requirements for the redesign project. Library users who have ideas to share are invited to meet with her on July 14 at a time that will be announced in the library and on the library’s website. Library users may email suggestions to: [email protected].
The interior of the Chestertown Library has changed very little since the 1980s. Quiet study areas and small meeting spaces may be needed, and a new circulation desk that meets ADA guidelines will be installed.
This preliminary design project is being funded through a special grant from the Foundation for the Kent County Library. Richard Kalter, Chairman of the Foundation, stated, “The Foundation was pleased to make this grant because as libraries are changing in response to new technologies, our library in Kent County must change as well to be prepared to meet the future needs of our community.”
