Honors Piano Trio at the Mainstay May 11

On Sunday May 11 at 4:00 pm, the Mainstay will present the Honors Piano Trio as part of its Hedgelawn Classical Music Series Admission is $15.

The members of the Honors Piano Trio are all students at Temple University Music Prep’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians. They will play works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Wieniawski, and Arensky.

Honors Piano Trio look 20130303Daniel Kim (violin), 15, has been studying the violin since the age of 4 and studies with Yayoi Numazawa and Yumi Scott of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has been a recipient of the Dorothy & Richard Starling Scholarship for excellence in violin performance at Temple Music Prep’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians since 2008. He has been soloist with the Ambler Symphony, the Kennett Symphony, and won the Tri-County Youth Festival competition. He has attended the Meadowmount School of Music for several summers. He is an avid soccer player.

Isaiah Kim, Daniel’s brother, is 12 and has been studying cello since he was four. He is a member of the Youth Chamber Orchestra at Temple Prep’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians. Isaiah has performed as soloist with the Warminster Symphony Orchestra, and, as the winner of the Children’s division of the 2012 Philadelphia Orchestra’s Greenfield Competition, performed as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra in February, 2013. He has attended the Meadowmount School of Music for several summers, and has performed in master classes for such notable cellists as Hans Jensen and Lynn Harrell. He loves the outdoors and playing soccer on a travel team.

Stephen Li is 16 years old and began piano lessons at the age of 5. By age 7 he had participated in competitions and received awards in the 2004 Young Pianist Competiton of New Jersey. Among numerous other awards were the Silver Medal (level 7) at the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati in 2005. Performances resulting from competitions were at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in NY (04, 05, 09, 12), Steinway Hall in NY (05), Elizabethtown College (04), and West Chester University in PA (03, 09, 10, 11, 12). At the age of 7 he played as soloist with the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra of New Jersey, where the conductor remarked it was his first time conducting a 7 year old musician in his 50-year conducting career. He studies piano with Marc-Antonio Barone at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music. Besides piano, Stephen plays violin with the orchestra and string ensemble at Haverford High School, and is a member of the Main Line Youth Chamber Orchestra.
