Local poets and the middle school winners of the Ann Hennessy Poetry Contest will read their works in a poetry reading at the Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland on Sunday May 3 at 4:00 pm. Admission is free.
For years the late Ann Hennessy, the Rock Hall writer and activist, organized this annual poetry reading to celebrate the works of local poets. After her death in 2008, the Mainstay renamed the event “The Ann Hennessy Live Poets’ Society” in her honor. This is the 9th annual Live Poets’ Society poetry reading at the Mainstay.
Local poet, photographer and environmentalist Howard McIntyre has organized the event and the poetry contest for the past several years. Middle school students in Kent County’s public and private schools were invited to enter up to two original poems (not to exceed thirty lines each) on the theme of water and in any form. This year more than 100 student poets from Kent County Middle School, Radcliff Creek Middle, Kent School, and Chestertown Christian School submitted nearly 200 entries. The winners will read their winning entries at the Mainstay along with readings by a number of established local poets.
The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall’s old time Main Street. For information and reservations call the Mainstay at 410-639-9133. More information is also available at the Mainstay’s website https://www.mainstayrockhall.org.
