Dear Editor:
Last week I had the honor and privilege to sponsor and participate in the 5th Annual Washington College Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Over 100 men, mostly college students, wearing red high heels, together with friends and supporters, marched from campus to Fountain Park to increase awareness of the devastating impact of sexual violence and to benefit For All Seasons, Inc., which operates a local Mental Health Clinic and Rape Crisis Center.
While seeing grown men in red high heels prompted some laughter, sexual violence and domestic abuse are no joke; they are senseless acts that are immeasurably destructive and scarring to victims and their families. While representing neglected and abused children in hundreds of cases on the Eastern Shore and in Baltimore County and City for nearly a decade, I witnessed firsthand the psychological damage which never completely heals. The Walk last week gave me renewed insight into the lonely and discomforting journey victims encounter as they seek to reconstruct their lives and attain justice.
As candidate for Kent County State’s Attorney, I pledge to prioritize the prosecution of such crimes and to reinstate the position of Victim-Witness Services Coordinator in the State’s Attorney’s Office to provide help to victims and witnesses as they navigate the legal system.
Thanks to Washington College, co-sponsor Soroptimist International of Kent County, and my fellow participants who made the Walk a success and helped provide needed funds to For All Seasons.
