Mount Harmon Plantation will kick off its 2014 Program Series with a lecture Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 pm. The speaker is Marguerite Holloway, author of the widely acclaimed biography of John Randel, Jr., the man who made the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal possible, as well as creating New York City’s grid design. Her book is called, “The Measure of Manhattan: the Tumultous Career and Surprising Legacy of John Randel, Jr., Cartographer, Surveyor, Inventor.” John Randel, Jr. had a significant impact, not only on the history of New York City, but also on our corner of the world.
Holloway has been a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism since 1997, where she is the director of science and environmental journalism. She was awarded Columbia’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2009. She is a contributing editor at Scientific American and has also written for Discover, New York Times, Natural History and Wired.
History lovers, do not miss this chance to learn more about the genius behind the design of the Frenchtown Railroad, C & D Canal, Manhattan, and Randel’s numerous inventions of the pre-industrial age.
