Tom McHugh, founder and Executive Director of the Mainstay in Rock Hall, will be the fourth and final speaker in the RiverArts’ Winter Wednesday lecture series on creativity. Tom’s talk, “Do the Pieces Make a Whole?” will reflect the aspects of creativity discussed by the previous speakers as they apply to his own creative impulses.

An educator, musician, poet, painter, boater, and devoted father, Tom says, “We now know that creativity is in all of us, and is dependent to some degree on inherited factors, but also on environmental conditions like parenting, education, and exposure to stimuli. My personal history is one that might have stifled any creative outlook… loss of my father at age four, placement in an orphanage at age eight, and ten years there of extreme regimentation. Still, a creative impulse emerged. Why? How?”
After graduating from Temple University and earning his PhD at Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia, Tom taught at Washington College and Vassar before retiring to Rock Hall. Here, he created the Mainstay, Home of Musical Magic, where he could devote his unstoppable energy to sharing a life-long passion for music.
