The Friends of the Kent County Maryland War of 1812 and the Kent County Battle of Caulk’s Field 2014 committee are sponsoring a River Packet fundraiser, April 25.
Participants will enjoy history and hors d’oeuvres while sailing along the Chester River in the River Packet, the latest addition to the Chestertown waterfront. Whatever the weather, guests can remain comfortable in the spacious River Packet passenger cabin.
The guest lecturer will be Gene Allen Smith, author of The Slaves’ Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812, the scrupulously researched account of the lives of enslaved people during the War of 1812. Food will be provided by Occasions Catering.
The cost is $75 per person. Spaces are limited and pre-event registration is required. Boarding will be at 5:30 p.m. at the foot of High Street, Chestertown. For information or to register online, check the Friends of Kent County web site kentcounty1812.org. For more information contact the Kent County Office of Tourism and Economic Development, 410-778-0416.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit War of 1812 bicentennial activities, including the re-enactment of the Battle of Caulk’s Field, scheduled on the very day, 200 years later, in the very place near Fairlee where the Aug. 31, 1812 battle was fought by Maryland Militia against British Royal Marines and sailors.
