Michael Gary II, a recipient of the Charlie Byrd Memorial Scholarship at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, brings a jazz quintet to the Mainstay in Rock Hall, Maryland for an afternoon of jazz standards and original compositions on Sunday April 6 at 4:00 pm.
Michael Gary II is a second year student at Peabody where he has been awarded the Charlie Byrd Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Gary graduated from Baltimore School for the Arts in 2012 and studying with Paul Bollenback for his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Guitar Performance.
Gary’s quintet includes Gary on guitar, Rachel Winder on alto sax, Justin Taylor on piano, Jeron White on bass and Warren Wolf on drums. They are planning a program of jazz standards, some music from the 40s to the 60s and a few original compositions.
He works regularly with gospel artist and songwriter Steve McCoy, and has recorded with several gospel artists, including Earnest Pugh and Derrick McDuffey in Portland, Oregon. Gary has played at the Stellar Awards for both Steve McCoy and Derrick McDuffey, and has played with McCoy for the Rhythm of Gospel Awards.
He also has played for Michelle Obama at the U.S. Botanical Garden and for the Nelson Mandela tribute at the U.S. Capitol. Beside performing and studying at Peabody, Gary is learning to be a studio engineer and producer.
