Brrrr….it’s cold outside!! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during cold weather:
-All pets need adequate shelter from the elements and insulation against cold weather. Pets should not be left outside for long periods in freezing weather. Like humans, they can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite. The young and senior pets are especially at risk.
-Fresh water is a must at all times. Pets are not able to get enough water from licking or eating snow. Be sure to check the water supply often to make sure it is not frozen.
-Never let your dog off leash on snow or ice – they can lose their scent and easily become lost.
-Just like in summer, never leave your cat or dog alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
-Take a minute to wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he/she comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He/she can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws.
-Watch out for cats! Outdoor cats sometimes seek shelter near warm car engines and sleep under the hoods of vehicles. If the engine starts, the fan belt can kill the animal. If there are outdoor cats in your neighborhood, bang on the car hood before starting up the motor to let the cat escape.
