On Sunday, December 8, 10 AM, Ms. Liz Salett will give a sermon entitled “Modern Times, Modern Slavery” for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River, 914 Gateway Dr., Chestertown. Human trafficking and modern-day slavery is a new concept to many of us who thought that the issue of slavery was resolved over 150 years ago. In fact, every day now we learn more and more about the many forms that slavery takes in our modern world, where over 20 million people are now enslaved, with over 55,000 in the U.S. itself. In this talk we will examine some of the ways in which human trafficking and slavery presents across sectors and countries and what some of the driving forces are in its current growth. We will also look at the question of who are the minors that are being inducted into sex trafficking in our communities and what some of the causes for this may be.
In 1983, Liz founded the International Counseling Center, a multilingual mental health referral network that later evolved to become the National MultiCultural Institute, a private non-profit organization promoting understanding and respect among people of different racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Liz first became aware of the issue of human trafficking and modern slavery in 2003 while looking for a speaker for one of the NMCI conferences. Through the web portal, www.humantraffickingsearch.net and related activities, Liz’s goal is to create greater awareness of the issue and to support initiatives to address solutions.
