Shore Shakespeare Accepting Proposals From Directors for Upcoming Show

November 11, 2013 by

Got an itch to direct a Shakespeare play? Here’s your chance! In the spring, Shore Shakespeare will present Romeo & Juliet at the Adkins Arboretum outside Ridgely and other venues TBA. Shore Shakespeare is currently accepting proposals from candidates interested in directing this timeless romantic tragedy.

In keeping with the Elizabethan-era theatergoing experience, performances of Romeo & Juliet will be outdoors. Limited sound and lighting equipment are available. Reasonable costuming and set design/construction requirements can be accommodated.

Romeo & Juliet will be presented at the Arboretum on May 31 and June 1 and 2, 2014. Auditions will be held in January; rehearsals are expected to begin in March.

Shore Shakespeare debuted in May of 2013 with the comedy Twelfth Night, which was presented to appreciative — and surprisingly large — audiences at the Adkins Arboretum and Chestertown’s Wilmer Park. In October, the troupe presented A Little Touch of Shakespeare, an original production of 14 different scenes from a variety of the Bard’s plays, organized around a battle-of-the-sexes theme.

Interested candidates are invited to submit proposals for Romeo & Juliet to Shore Shakespeare at [email protected], or by post to 1129 Hope Road, Centreville, MD 21617, no later than Dec. 1. Please provide the following:

Your prior directing experience, with emphasis on Shakespeare;
Your prior theatrical experience in other capacities, with emphasis on Shakespeare;
Special insight into, or affinity for, Shakespeare, and specifically for Romeo & Juliet;
A brief synopsis of your directorial vision for the play;
Restrictions on your availability between March 1 and June 2, 2014 (Caribbean vacation, safari to Africa, your cousin’s wedding in Denver, etc.); and
Other relevant information of which you think Shore Shakespeare should be aware while considering your proposal.
Shore Shakespeare is also seeking candidates to select and direct other Shakespeare plays in 2014 and beyond. If you wish to be considered to direct another play, please indicate which one interests you and why.

Shores Shakespeare, established in 2013, is a pan-community theatre company organized to present the works of the classical theatre repertoire with an emphasis on the works of WIlliam Shakespeare and to generate public support and enthusiasm for all of our local community theatres.
