Sunday, September 8, 2013 marks the start of the twenty-first program year for the Unitarian Universalists of the Chester River in Kent County. The first service of the new year will feature the Rev. Dr. David Newell, Minister to UUCR. Dr. Newell’s sermon, The Quest for Community, poses such questions as: “Are human beings “loners” by nature, or are we naturally inclined to be social creatures?” and “Is social interaction a source of human happiness or are we much more content when the rest of society leaves us alone”
Following the sermon will be the traditional Water Ceremony, which welcomes home all who have traveled far and wide during the summer months. Members bring to the service a small amount of water from a place that is special to them. During the appointed time in the service, people one by one pour their water together into a large bowl. The combined water is symbolic of shared faith coming from many different sources.
Throughout the fall and running through December, UUCR will welcome back to their pulpit returning friends, Dr. Michael Franch, Dr. Balu Athreya, Rev. Greg Chute, Rev. John Ames, Bob Denison, Ms. Annie Lavin, and UUCR founder Ms. Pat Bjorke, who will all serve as presenters on the Sundays not covered by Dr. Newell. New-to-UUCR’s-pulpit guests Dr. Lark Eshleman, James Gibbons Walker, and Ms. Liz Salett will be speakers as well.
Religious education for youngsters as well as childcare for infants and toddlers will be available every Sunday through May, 2014.
UUCR also invites the community to participate in any or all of this year’s Adult Religious Education (ARE) programs, which are slated to include sets of classes based on discussions and/or video screenings.
